WEEK 9
Storyboards → Animatics → Motion
  • Storyboards for Motion Design
Purpose:
Use a series of static sketches to show the storyboard composition, scene sequence, perspective changes and narration rhythm, and align team and client cognition.

Key steps:
Analyze the script and mark key plot points

Sketch each shot scene, mark the time, action direction, lines, and sound effects

Use tools (such as Milanote or Boords) to build grid templates for collaborative editing and feedback

The diagram includes blank grids, multi-grid scenes, and description columns to clearly show "what picture, which shot, and what content is described".
  • Animatics for Motion Design
Definition: Arrange the storyboard still frames according to the timeline, add sound tracks, shot lengths, and basic transitions to generate rough animations.

Purpose:
Can quickly verify whether the rhythm, lens flow and audio-visual synchronization are reasonable

Reduce the risk of rework and optimize the production process in a low-cost way

Production points:
Import the storyboard board into the video timeline

Insert narration/music track

Set the display time of each frame and add simple transitions

Video example reference: Animatics video shows the smooth combination of sound and picture.
  • From Storyboard to Final Motion
Process Overview:
After completing Animatic, create keyframe animation and camera movement in software such as AE

Introduce graphic transitions, Easing curve adjustment, add details and polish

Gradually replace rough pictures with fine materials to achieve the final animation

The animation granularity is gradually progressive from storyboard → animatic → final motion

Finely control the duration, rhythm, and movement of the shot

Use pre-combination, templates, and keyframe easing to ensure smooth and natural pictures

WEEK 10
3D Camera Tracker
Apply the 3D Camera Tracker feature to the material in the After Effects project.

Wait for the tracking analysis to complete, and the interface will automatically generate tracking points to represent the plane structure (wall, ground) in the material.

In the Tracking Points view, select a set of tracking point areas located on the wall or ground.
Fig1.2 Example,Week 10(17/6/2015)

Create 3D cameras and null objects
Right-click on the tracking point and select "Create Camera" to create a three-dimensional camera; then select "Create Null and Camera" to generate a null object that follows the camera.

The Null object is consistent with the camera, so that subsequent attached layers will be able to align and fit with the plane.

Replace elements and fit the plane
Drag your graphics, text or video (usually a Solid layer or pre-composition) into the composition project and set it as a 3D layer.

Set the parent of the layer to the invalid fair made.
Alter the layer position, scale and revolution to form the protest precisely "fit" on the divider or ground plane.
Key point: At this point, the position of the layer in 3D space is bound to null, and it'll keep up the proper viewpoint as the camera moves.

Include visual points of interest to upgrade authenticity
Add a slight movement obscure, point by point shadows, or angle covers to the layer to create the question mix more actually into the foundation.
You'll be able perform a few color adjustment and commotion preparing on the layer to form it steady with the initial video fashion.

Output and verification
When previewing the effect, as the camera moves, the fitted object will align with the scene freely.

If you find "floating" or "goofs", you can fine-tune the tracking point, the position of Null, or the layer parameters.

PROJECT 3
We will synthesis the knowledge gained in Task 1 and 2 for application in Task 3.
We are to continue with previously chosen channel in Task 2 to create a channel ident motion graphic video.

WEEK 9
This week, we first created a mood-board that reflects their concept/idea and then drew a storyboard.

Idea development
Initially, we searched for Adidas posters online to get inspiration for video production, and found that Adidas’s promotional images were mainly composed of people pictures + text.
Fig2.1 Style Guide,Week 9(11/6/2025)

In addition, since Adidas’ brand concept is based on simplicity and trendy street style, we looked for some advertising/promotional videos with similar styles, hoping to use them in the final video of project 3.
Fig2.2 Video reference,Week 9(12/6/2025)

We did a simple search online to find moodboards that would improve the style of the final video.
The theme was the same as the reference video, which was centered on the Adidas brand style, simple and trendy. In order to avoid duplication with the style guide images, we selected the most iconic images.

Next, Yang Jiayi and I started discussing the details of the video production. Because the early preparation stage took a lot of time, we didn’t draw too many sketches even though we were fully prepared. We focused our time on drawing the storyboard.
Fig2.4 Sketches,Week 9(14/6/2025)

Next, Jiayi and I mainly drew storyboards for the layout of the video and how to transition. This is due to Adidas' brand style, and most of the video will be presented in the form of pictures + text.
During the drawing process, we often have some sudden inspirations, some of which replaced the original plan, which also helped our final presentation to be more in line with expectations.

WEEK 10
This week, Jiayi and I started to work on the final video.
Because Mr. Fauzi asked us to use what we learned previously, we planned to add 3D effects and dynamic graphic elements to the video.

First, we found the material we needed on the Internet according to our general video style and imported it into Photoshop to make it into a transparent background image for easy editing.
Fig2.7 Video Production Process,Week 10(16/6/2025)

In the previous storyboard, we designed many transitions and animations, so now we need to present it in AE.
Fig2.8 Video Production Process,Week 10(18/6/2025)

After the feedback from the class this week, we decided to adjust the production details in the video. According to Mr. Fauzi’s suggestion, we will try to reduce the use of original animations and use more efficient pictures and text to express the content of the video.

In order to make the video more effective and more in line with the requirements, I used the dynamic graphics related content I practiced before.
Fig2.9 Video Production Process,Week 10(20/6/2025)

In order to make the video more vivid, we decided to add 3D images and transitions.
For the newly added transition, we decided to use the three stripes of Adidas, but in order to avoid the monotony of the movement effect, we changed the direction of movement.

FEEDBACK
WEEK 10
You don’t need to make complex dynamic effects. You can use efficient production methods, such as combining pictures with patterns. Similar production methods can also produce good effects.

REFLECTION
Experiences
In the third project, I kept working on the channel design from Project 2 and created a short animation for the channel's identity. I began by creating mood boards, sketches, and storyboards. I tried out different styles, music, and ways to animate, and then picked the best one to finish. In the end, I picked the best one to finish.
When making animations with After Effects, I tried to move the logo and graphics in rhythm. This process taught me a lot about time control and brand expression.

Observations
I found that even if the animation is only a dozen seconds, the rhythm is very important. Too fast will make people unclear, and too slow will easily make people lose interest. Sound effects are also critical, which will affect the atmosphere of the animation and make the picture more dynamic.
In addition, keeping a consistent color and graphic style will make the work look more professional and unified.

Findings
Every second is important in a short animation.
The right sound effects will greatly enhance the effect.
A unified design style can strengthen the sense of brand.
Even simple animations should be supported by clear concepts.
