INSTRUCTION

LECTURES

week 1

In the first week, Mr. Martin told us about what we will be learning this semester and asked us to tell everyone about ourselves. We put together the messy video clips to make one video in the first week's task. We have to make a full video using the character's words and actions. This is the best way for us to learn the basics of PR software. We did one video in class, and we will finish another video after class.

week 2

Shot Size
The shot size determines how large the area that’s visible within the frame.
  1. Wide Shot
  2. Medium Shot
  3. Medium Close Up Shot
  4. Over-shoulder Shot
  5. Extreme Wide Shot
  6. Medium Wide Shot
  7. Close-up Shot
  8. Extreme Close-up Shot
Wide Shot
A wide shot includes the entire subject and important objects in the immediate surroundings. If it's used at the beginning of a scene it's often called an "establishing shot”.
fig2.1 Wide Shot,week 2 (2/5/2024)

Medium Shot
A medium shot shows the subject that are important to understanding - Gesture and expression, from the person waist up, letting hands and the lower half of his body fall outside the frame.
fig2.2 Medium Shot,week 2 (2/5/2024)

Medium Close Up Shot
Medium close up films subject character from approximately midway between waist and shoulders to above the head.
fig2.3 Medium Close Up Shot,week 2 (2/5/2024)

Over-shoulder Shot
The over-shoulder shot shows the subject from behind the shoulder of another person.
fig2.4 Over-shoulder Shot,week 2 (2/5/2024)

Extreme Wide Shot
Shows a broad view of the surroundings around the character and conveys scale, distance, and geographical location. It's used to show where character is in his/her environment.
fig2.5 Extreme Wide Shot,week 2 (2/5/2024)

Medium Wide Shot
A medium wide shot shows a character usually cut off across the legs above or below the knees. It is wide enough to show the physical setting in which the action is taking place, it permit a nice balance of figure and surrounding.
fig2.6 Medium Wide Shot,week 2 (2/5/2024)

Close-up Shot
A close-up is used to isolate the most important part of the subject. For a speaker, this is generally the head, or small object. It emphasizes facial expression, details of a object.
fig2.7 Close-up Shot,week 2 (2/5/2024)

Extreme Close-up Shot

An extreme close-up single out a portion of the face magnifies a detail. The object is to focus on important detail either to increase the drama or impact on a situation or to allow the viewer to see necessary picture information more clearly.

fig2.8 Extreme Close-up Shot,week 2 (2/5/2024)

The shot size determines how large the area that’s visible within the frame.
fig2.9 Summary of shooting angles,week 2 (2/5/2024)

We also referred to some other shooting angles to give us a better understanding.

  • 45º (¾ angling) Facial modelling is best,Front and side of the face, if properly lighted will appear round and eyes are displayed fully.
  • 3 Dimensional solidity When shooting two or more shots, 3D can increase the three-dimensional effect and the performance will be better.
  • Reduce parallel lines Adjust the angle of the camera so that the parallel lines gradually decrease, ensuring that the viewer’s gaze is carried into the distance.
  • Camera height and camera distance Artistic, dramatic and psychological overtones may be contributed to the story-telling by adjusting the height of the camera to the subject.
  • Eye-level angle camera films from the eye level of an observer of average height or from the subject’s eye level.
  •  Low angle shot camera is tilted upward to view the subject. Low angle shot can make a character look bigger, stronger, or more noble. It also gives the impression of height.
  • High angle shot A high angle shot can make a character look smaller, younger, weak, confused, or more childlike.

Screen Direction

Dynamic Screen Direction:

Constant screen travel depicts subject motion in one direction only

Static Screen Direction:

The rule enforces the camera stay on a horizontal axis and not cross sections so that it will disorient the viewer.

180º Degree Rule:

The minimum angle difference between two shots of the same scene is 180 degrees.

This rule is intended to ensure that the viewer is not surprised or confused when the camera switches.

We will set up a virtual "lens line" so that the camera always shoots on one side of this line.

Understand storytelling
The three-act structure is a narrative framework commonly used in drama, film, novels, and other storytelling formats. It divides the entire story into three main parts, each with its own distinct purpose and development:

Act One (Exposition): Introduction
  • Act One is mainly to explain the story background, the main people, and the main problem. This part usually sets up the main situation of the story, so the audience knows where the story begins and what drives the main character.
Act Two (Rising Action): Conflict and Development
  • Act Two is where the story starts to get more complicated. There are more problems and surprises. The main characters have a harder time in this part, their goals might be stopped, or they meet new problems.
Act Three (Climax and Resolution): Climax and Conclusion
  • Act Three is the most exciting part of the story, where everything comes together and the story is solved. In this section, the problems in the story get really intense, the main characters have to overcome a big challenge, and they eventually solve the problem or reach their goals.

week 3
Storyboard
storyboard is a visual representation of a film sequence and breaks down the action into individual panels. It is a series of ordered drawings, with camera direction, dialogue, or other pertinent details. It sketches out how a video will unfold, shot by shot.
It's like practicing or testing your movie, video, or ad in a comic book format before it's done.
  • Create pictures or photos to show each part of the story.
  • A description of the shot - any important details about what is happening in the scene, what is being said, or how the scene is set up.
  • Shot details - size of shot, length of lens, two shots, etc.
  • Arrows show where the camera or characters go in the scene, and how each shot is linked together.

My observation: When the husband was eating potato chips beside his pregnant wife, he accidentally found that the child would move with the potato chips. When the wife threw the potato chips away, the child rushed out, and finally led to the advertisement, which vividly showed the delicious potato chips and even the unborn baby wanted to taste them. The whole advertisement was humorous and funny.

Share three stop-motion animations that I like
The cost of the call:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0C-TNNyAVA

Appeal to people not to make phone calls while walking, especially while crossing the road, which will seriously distract you, hurt or even endanger your life, and the final grave is a warning.

Bake a cake: https://youtu.be/qIRrwT6SkrE
Belle and Aria, who are a mother and daughter, choose to make a cake together. The two people gather their ingredients and start getting them ready. Belle doesn't know that Aria has a different plan for the cake. Belle is mixing the ingredients, but she leaves the mixing bowl alone for a little while to check on the oven and do something outside the kitchen. In a short time, Aria sneakily puts her chopped chocolate into the cake mix, then quickly leaves before anyone sees her. Belle comes back and looks confused at first, then she sighs and hugs the chocolate drink, realizing that her daughter really likes it. She keeps baking and decorating the cake without getting discouraged. Aria is very happy to have the chocolate cake. Belle is happy to give it to her daughter because she knows Aria loves it.
The whole animation is very warm and pleasant, and the image of the little rabbit is more lovely.

About marine debris: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeBysLEqtKY
Because people do not cherish marine resources and do not pay attention to protecting the environment, global warming and overflowing of marine garbage lead to the rise of sea level, and marine life is greatly reduced as a result of fishing. The man's home in the video first poured into a large number of fishing nets and rubbish, expressing that people did not pay attention to protecting the sea, and finally their home was submerged by the sea. The man struggled in the sea, expressing the serious consequences of not cherishing resources and protecting resources. Mankind will face the havoc of the sea.
The man was submerged in the water by fishing net rubbish and struggled to choke on the water and finally lost his life. At the same time, he also showed the despair of the marine life in Shanghai at that time. This kind of expression is very infectious.

week 2
Use different shooting angles and edit into a complete video and add subtitles.
Different shots:
Low angle Wide shot

Frontal MCU (soft background)

Frontal MS (soft background)

Extreme Close-Up shot

Side angle MS (soft background)

¾ angling MCU shot (with blurry/soft foreground)

Close-Up shot

Eye-Level Medium-Wide shot

Finally, a complete video clip was edited:

We were told to make a new video for Lalin.
We need to download video clips and edit them into a complete story, and add sound effects and background music to enrich the video picture.
First of all, I arranged the video clips in logical order and deleted the original sound to make it easier to add background music later.
fig2.1 Piecing together fragments,week 2 (2/5/2024)

After that, I added mobile phone subtitles and their sound effects to make the video less stodgy.
fig2.1 Add mobile phone sound effects,week 2 (2/5/2024)

Finally, I added background music and finished the editing of the whole video.

REFLECTION
The instructor gave us video clips, we sorted them and got a preparatory understanding of the essential operations and boards of Debut Master.
We learned around distinctive video points. We replied questions in course to memorize what diverse points were. At that point we practiced in sets to way better get it what diverse shooting points were, and at last orchestrated them into a video. , put the content, we begin to hone two movie clips, alter, we ought to put the exchange box within the fitting position, sort the clips, I think it is exceptionally curiously.
We learned the three-act structure
